40 Days of Cooking

I decided to make 40 days a milestone.

Top Awards goes to:
1. Fried rice from August 15th
2. Sushi from August 30th
3. Spaghetti from September 7th
4. Curry from August 23rd

Lessons Learned:
1. Use ingredients that are as fresh as possible
2. Leftovers should be eaten within two, three days
3. Dumplings are a sure bet for a quick and filling meal

Thursday September 13, 2007

B: 7 chicken nuggets w. honey roasted garlic BBQ sauce

L: I had a lunch date with Audrey today. We went to New China.
Vermicelli with beef

It was distinctly unlike any other Vietnamese food I've ever had.

D: This is when I start really feeling like a starving college student. I still can't microwave zong zhi. Out of the whole "pyramid" of rice, I can get only three edible bites. It's not very good to begin with, I guess, so I don't have qualms about tossing it. But it is sad that all I have after waiting 3 minutes for it to heat up, all I have to show for it is hardened rice and rice that eats like it's uncooked but beyond salvaging. That's my "rant" of the day.

Leinah saves the day. She'd given me some salmon earlier.

3 bites of zong zhi
2 pieces of pre-seasoned salmon (I couldn't finish all three.)
1 Albertson's nonfat strawberry banana yogurt, 8 oz. (Note: the texture changes once the yogurt's been frozen)

B: A little bit of mostly-frozen Albertson's strawberry nonfat yogurt, 8 oz.
It didn't thaw in time, so I took some Cheez-Its with me to go.

L: Finished the rest of the Cheez-Its I had, then got Gaucho Cafe's Grilled Rosemary Chicken sandwich (plenty of chicken, some kind of cheese, red bell pepper, caramelized onions, and some sort of sauce on a french baguette). Ordered a fountain soda: Sweetened Raspberry Iced Tea. Total? $7.49. Slightly pricey.

Snack: Finished the rest of the Albertson's yogurt

D: Fried rice

F: Grapefruit

Friday September 7, 2007

B: 1 banana

L: 2 Hebrew National(R) hot dogs w. Ball Park(R) hot dog buns, toasted + ketchup

F: 1/2 tomato
I was cooking, and had half a tomato left over. I was hungry, cooking but doing no eating. So down it went!

D: Today was another "cook in bulk day." I made two entrees, spaghetti, and soup.
Specifically, I made:

Fried tofu w. Chinese mushroom (sliced), ground beef, and scallion. Seasoned with soy sauce and salt.

Napa cabbage, sliced, with dried shrimp. I was very happy that my estimate of vegetable to shrimp matched nicely!

Angel hair pasta w. ground beef (mixed with soy sauce and salt), diced tomato, diced onion, garlic, and ketchup to taste. I LOVED this. It reminded me of mom :)

"Cucumber" substitute and egg drop soup, w. scallion. Seasoned with salt, garlic salt, and black pepper. The only thing was I forgot to peel the cucumber skin. But it's just a little rougher, still OK.

The second-to-last-dish, spaghetti (albeit Chinese style spaghetti), was my dinner. I had soup afterwards.
The rest goes in the refrigerator for a later time.

Here's a picture of my dinner:

L: Rice w. sliced bean curd w. beef
The three dishes I'd cooked, minus the green beans because I think they'd started to go bad :(
Mango shrimp

F: Green grapes (that's the last of the grapes for a while!)

D: Baked potato w. grated sharp cheddar cheese and sour cream
I put so much sour cream (and even more cheese), the whole thing started having the consistency of mousse/cheesecake/cookie dough while mixed together with small cubes of potato. At least I baked it correctly this time, as none of the inside was still hard/cold. 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 and 1/4 hour.
5 chicken nuggets w. ketchup

Late-night nutrition: V-8 100% Vegetable Juice
